Sir Ridley Scott To Direct "Shadow Divers"
South Portland, Maine - June 30, 2005 - Fresh off the release of this summer's epic "Kingdom of Heaven" Sir Ridley Scott has agreed to direct the adaptation of Robert Kurson's best-selling novel "Shadow Divers".
The book follows wreck divers Richie Kohler and John Chatterton, co-hosts of Deep Sea Detectives, produced by Lone Wolf Documentary Group for The History Channel, who discovered a sunken World War II U-boat just off the coast of New Jersey in 1991.
Exploring the wreck consumed the pair's lives for the next seven years, costing them three diving companions as they endeavored to discover the origins of the boat they nicknamed U-Who.
This exploration was documented in an award-winning episode of the popular PBS series NOVA entitled "Hitler's Lost Sub" - produced by Lone Wolf Documentary Group's Kirk Wolfinger and Rushmore DeNooyer.
20th Century Fox owns the rights to the book and handed it over to the screenplay writer of "Cast Away", Bill Broyles, to write the script before taking an early draft to Sir Ridley Scott.
Elizabeth Gabler, of 20th Century Fox, was delighted when she got the answer she was looking for, "He [Scott] is a tough date, he doesn't say yes a lot, but he responded immediately."
The ever-busy director already has one film in the pipeline - "A Good Year", about a London banker who moves to the south of France to live on a vineyard - and is shooting another short film for the children's charity, UNICEF.
"Shadow Divers" could prove a major logistical challenge so the big-screen debut may not be until 2007.
