Lone Wolf Documentary Group Wins CINE's Masters Series Award

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine-April 27, 2004-Lone Wolf Documentary Group is the recipient of CINE's top award for 2003; the Masters Series Award for the documentary Fire On The Mountain, produced for The History Channel.

The prestigious CINE Masters Series award recognizes the best of the best in broadcast, non-broadcast and pre-professional divisions. Only the highest scoring CINE Golden Eagle winners qualify. Winners are chosen by an elite panel of distinguished leaders in the industry.

LWDG's Fire On The Mountain won for the Professional Telecast Non-Fiction Division. The two other Masters Series Awards went to Peter Jennings and Howie Masters of ABC News in the Professional Telecast News Division for the ABC News Special: Inside the Towers, and MacGillivray Freeman Films in the Professional Non-Telecast Division for their IMAX film, Coral Reef Adventure.

Fire On The Mountain, named after John Maclean's revelatory bestseller, exposes many troubling facts about the 1994 Storm King Fire in Colorado, which claimed the lives of 14 firefighters, facts that the official report overlooked or downplayed. It follows Maclean's investigation as he talks to the smokejumpers and hotshots who were there, federal investigators who refused to sign the official report, and family members of the victims. He pieces together an astonishing story that serves--belatedly--as a warning to all who fight the devastating forest fires that annually ravage the country.

Director/producer/writer, Lisa Wolfinger states "The film attempts to place the 1994 Storm King tragedy in its proper context: we tell the story of a parallel tragedy: the Mann Gulch fire in 1949 that claimed the lives of 13 smokejumpers. We explore how the 1949 tragedy served as a lesson to all firefighters on the line and how those lessons were forgotten 45 years later. The film is really about history repeating itself. It's an important message, but maybe more importantly, the film has heart: you end up caring about the victims and the people left behind; you also get to know the author, John Maclean and his personal motives for pursuing the story."
