It must be noted that in bringing the story to the channel, Mr. Kranz, NASA's resident missionary at Mission Control for many years, was giving himself another opportunity to sell his life story. His memoirs came out a few years ago, and before that, in 1995, he was lionized through Ed Harris's Oscar-nominated performance in "Apollo 13." Every American thinks they know the story of the Pilgrims, their voyage on the Mayflower and the first Thanksgiving. But the sanitized and homogenized version we all learned in school and revisit every Thanksgiving holiday bears little resemblance to the dramatic actual events and people we think we know so well.

The 3 hour special will dig deeper into the facts than any film to date. Accurate dramatizations taken from original source material will bring to life the story of a small group of men, women and children who live through religious persecution, exile and a harrowing journey to a hostile land in the hope of creating a new and better life. Of the 100 colonists who survive the journey on the Mayflower, half die of starvation and exposure in that first winter.

This is not the sanitized version of the Pilgrim story: it is about violence and dissension; intolerance and fear; deceit and blackmail and ultimately perseverance and heroism. Only the help and pity of the native inhabitants, notably the famous Squanto of legend, pull them through their terrible ordeal. Though the colonists first see the Indians as "savages," they must ultimately acknowledge that the Indians are not only fellow human beings but friends. The story ends with the first Thanksgiving and a new beginning: the beginning of a new life for the Pilgrims and the beginning of the end for the Indians.
